In Senate primaries, Republicans follow Trump's lead

(Vice President Mike Pence's brother won the GOP primary for Messer's House seat on Tuesday.) They began attacking each other a year ago before either of them had announced his candidacy.

Brown, the Democratic incumbent, has always been tough on trade, and he praised Trump's moves to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The district stretches from Charlotte through poorer areas close to Fort Bragg.

Many in the GOP, including President Trump, drew comparisons between Blankenship and Judge Roy Moore, who lost a reliably Republican senate seat to Doug Jones (D), largely owing to allegations of sexual misconduct with underage girls.

All three candidates attempted to out-Trump each other. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia won by 40 percentage points.

In North Carolina there's no race for governor or Senate this year, but voters renominated a group of House members, including two Republicans likely to face competitive races: Ted Budd and George Holding.

In both cases, Trump's party appears to have avoided the missteps that doomed candidates in high-profile Senate races in the past.

The fifth, Don Blankenship, is not endorsing Morrisey.

In his Tuesday night victory speech, Morrisey invited the president to make frequent visits between now and November.

Morrisey deflected criticism of his past lobbying ties to the pharmaceutical industry and his roots in New Jersey, where he lost a 2000 congressional race.

Coal baron and ex-convict Don Blakenship's surging popularity threw the GOP into a panic in the weeks approaching the election.

The divisive Blankenship, who served a year in prison for safety violations in a 2010 disaster that killed 29 miners, ran a racially charged campaign that included attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for creating jobs for "China people" and ads highlighting the Taiwanese heritage of McConnell's wife.Blankenship told supporters in Charleston, West Virginia, that he had no regrets about his campaign and blamed the "establishment" for the loss.

Instead, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey came out on top.

When asked ahead of Tuesday's primary whether Blankenship's ads were racist, McConnell said: "Well, we're going to find out what happens in West Virginia tonight, and I may have more to say about that tomorrow".

Morrisey will face Democrat Senator Joe Manchin, who is widely considered to be a weaker incumbent in the U.S. Senate.

The retired coal executive was released from prison past year for his role in a mine explosion that killed 29 men.

The image mimics an advertisement for the Netflix series "Narcos", which chronicles the cocaine trade in Colombia during the 1980's.

Rep. Jim Renacci in OH lived up to expectations by winning his party's Senate primary. Claire McCaskill (D) Missouri, Joe Donnelly (D) Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp (D) North Dakota, Sherrod Brown (D) OH, and Manchin are all considered vulnerable this November.

In most cases, the Republican candidates on the ballot Tuesday had competed to be seen as the most conservative, the most anti-Washington and the most loyal to the Republican president. Also in the race were Cleveland investment banker Mike Gibbons, Marysville small-business owner Melissa Ackison, Cincinnati-area financial management company founder Daniel Kiley and retired public administrator Don Elijah Eckhart, from Galloway.

Trump signaled optimism that Republicans would do well in the midterms. A few thoughts on last night's results: (1) Much of the media attention in advance of the voting was showered upon an, um, idiosyncratic businessman running for Senate in West Virginia.

President Trump is sending a plan to Congress that calls for stripping more than $15 billion in previously approved spending, with the hope that it will temper conservative angst over ballooning budget deficits.
