Elon Musk touts new tunnel under LA in video, promises free rides

Musk posted a video of the tunnel to his Instagram page Thursday night with the caption, "First Boring Company tunnel under LA nearly done!"

Musk, the brains behind SpaceX and Tesla, created the company to drill holes beneath Los Angeles to provide another means of transportation and alleviate the city's infamous traffic congestion. The first rides in the Boring Company tunnel will be free.

The first public rides could come in the next few months.

Pending regulatory approval, the system will offer free rides "in a few months", he said in a post on Instagram that featured a video of the tunnel. Musk may be counting on his huge fan base to help with the tricky task of getting the tunnel cleared for takeoff. "Strong support from public, elected officials & regulators is critical to success".

Fare prices have not been finalized yet, however, according to the company's website prices will be "comparable to or lower than current public transportation fares for pedestrians".

Musk has also confirmed that the company has already started tunnelling a route between Washington DC and NY and expects to begin work on a Los Angeles to San Francisco line next year.

The Los Angeles Times reported in April that members of the council's public works committee wanted to approve any proposal that could help untangle the city's nightmarish traffic. In particular, the company has already started to build a tunnel that will connect NY and Washington, and next year plans to start construction of the tunnel between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
