Creating Future / Creating Future - The Abya Yala House

Creating Future / Creating Future - The Abya Yala House

There is an anonymous appointment, something like "gardening is believing in the future". Maybe it's a little cloying, but it works for me, because I live it! Construction things are still slow, the car is still giving us problems. I'm frustrated, but I'll admit that some progress in the orchard field and planting keep me hopeful. When I see flowers and fruits and new plants coming out of the ground, that takes away the depression and, yes, it makes me believe in the future.

There is a quote, anonymous it seems at least not one seems to be able to identify its origin, that goes something like "to plant a garden is to believe in the future". It's a little saccharin maybe, but it works for me, because I live it! The construction is moving oh-so-slowly, the car keeps being a problem child. I'm frusterated, but I must admit that positives in the plant and planting arenas keep me hopeful. When I see new flowers and fruits and leaf buds and roots and baby plants pushing up through the dirt, it knocks me out of my poutiness and, yes, really, makes me believe in the future. (Or I guess I should say believe in a positive future, as one could just as well believe in a future crap, and that's not what I'm saying.)

Here is the cart full of forage peanuts and vetiver that Daniel looked for. Tomorrow we'll sow some of this abundance. So here's the car full of forage peanut and vetiver that Daniel went and picked up. We'll be planting some of this bounty tomorrow.

Talking about the nursery in Caracas, the plants have me excited. The rains have started a bit (although they came late and are not daily so the predictions of a comparatively dry rainy season seem to me to be accurate). I read about plants that do not respond well to the water of the jet, with its chlorine and what I know, but this year I'm watching it firsthand. Several plants that have passed through the drought without a single new leaf have suddenly exploded with growth since the first rains, especially in the pars (Passiflora quadrangularis), parapara (Sapindus saponaria), and Grewia occidentalis (a shrub of South Africa).

The chili, yellow, spiky, and sweet, all growing and maturing also make me smile. The little fig tree is sprouting beautiful and has 6 little ones. The comfrey is too large for his materos. Some purple sweet potatoes I brought from the north are ready to sow. But the most spectacular thing is that the little cafecito of less than two years old has a fruit. A nice little fruit! It is not possible, but there it is! The largest coffee has two frutitas. It is a wonder! I can not wait to have our own coffee crop!

The various capsicum - yellow pepper, espilette, and sweet pepper - are all flowering and fruiting like mad (though I do see the espilette with some powdery mildew) and they make me smile. Our little fig tree is leafing out beautifully and has 6 little figlets. The comfrey has grown out of its pots. A couple of purple sweet potatoes I brought from up north are ready for planting out. But the crazy-town award goes to the coffee plants. There is a green coffee cherry - just one - on our little kona plant that flowered when it was only a year and a half old. That's half the normal age for a coffee plant to start flowering. This little guy is under half a meter tall, and he has a coffee cherry on it. When I saw it I almost passed out - same as when I saw its first flower. Then I went and checked our much bigger coffee tree - it 's about to get tall and a little over 2 years old - and it' s two coffee cherries! Not quite shocking but equally exciting.

Small coffee plants (including small açai palm trees). The one on the right side is the one with the fruit. The small coffee plants (among them baby açaí palms). The one on the right is the one with the cherry.
