Majority of U.S. voters fear Trump will drag country into global conflict

The Quinnipiac poll was conducted after the rally in Charlottesville, where white nationalists clashed with counter-protesters, resulting in three deaths and at least 34 injuries.

President Donald Trump called a majority of the mainstream American media dishonest, bad and a "lobbying tool" for allegedly giving a platform to hate groups after the violence at a white supremacist rally in Virginia.

A new poll from Quinnipiac University found that most Americans believe President Trump is doing more to divide the country than to unite it. To get a number this low, you need virtual unanimity across all groups: only 6% of Republicans, 4% of people over 65, 3% of whites and 3% of independents said white supremacists were discouraged by Trump's behavior and comments.

President Trump's overall job approval was at 35 percent, while 59 percent disapprove. Another 10 percent said of those surveyed said they either did not know or were not certain which option they preferred.

Prejudice against minority groups is a "very serious" problem, 50 percent of voters say, while 31 percent say it is "somewhat serious", a new high for these numbers. Another survey by the The Economist weekly and YouGov showed 48 percent of people said the statue of Civil War commander Robert E. Lee should be removed from the park where it stands in Charlottesville, compared to 30 percent who said it should be removed; the remaining 22 percent of respondents expressed no opinion. And 3% of American voters said they "haven't heard enough" about Trump to say if they have a favorable or unfavorable view him. And in fact, if you use the term you'd get criticised. Twenty-seven percent disagree with this statement.

Sixty-eight percent of those polled said they concur that Trump's "words and actions could get us accidentally involved in an global conflict".

The poll surveyed 1,009 registered voters nationwide from August 13-17, and it had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
