Fig ~ Amate | Green flowers and scented leaves

Fig ~ Amate | Green flowers and scented leaves

Ficus is one of my favorite tree genera. It is a huge genus, made up of over 800 species. They are commonly called figs. They can be trees, bushes, or climbers. Many of them are epiphytes, at least for a portion of their lives. They are native to tropical regions worldwide.

Fig trees have extensive root systems that form dramatic structures; They elegantly embrace rocks, walls, or other trees. They often start as epiphytes, growing in forks between branches of trees, extending their roots down the boles, all the way to the ground. When they do this, they use the other trees for support, not sustenance. However, they can get so large and their roots can wound around other trees so tightly that they either crush or strangle their hosts.

Fig trees are also peculiar because of their fruits, called syconiums (see inset). Syconiums are actually fleshy stems with multiple flowers; They are both an inside-out flower and a hollow fruit. The figs we eat are syconiums - the fleshy insides are made up of the remains of tens or even thousands of flowers. Figs co-evolved with the fig wasps that pollinate them, one of the most fascinating examples of mutualism on Earth. (More on fig wasps some other day.)

The photograph shows a native Guatemalan Ficus wrapping its roots around rock near Santiago Atitlán, by the shores of the lake. Ficus is one of my favorite genres of plants. It is a huge genus, composed of more than eight hundred species. They can be trees, shrubs or vines. Many of the trees are epiphytes, at least for part of their life. They are native to the tropics around the world. In Guatemala they are generally known as amates.

The amates are also unique by their fruits, called siconos (see photo). Technically the sycamons are stems with flowers. They are fascinating: a sycoon is a flower with its parts from the outside in, and it is also a hollow fruit. The fig tree is a kind of Ficus, and the figs we eat are sycamons - its part of it is composed of the remains of tens or even thousands of flowers. The friends coevolved with the wasps that pollinate them, one of the most fascinating examples of mutualism on Earth. (One day I will write more about this relationship.)
